In 1951 Rice stores began as a rationed system, then changed to a registration system by prefectural governors, a permit system in 1982, a registration system under the Food Law in 1995, and a notification system in 2004. This history illustrates the transition from a government-mandated rice distribution system to one that made it easier for various retailers, such as supermarkets and convenience stores, to enter the market. After the war, rice was collected by agricultural cooperatives and distributed to consumers through the Food Agency and the Rice Distribution Corporation. The Rice Distribution Corporation was dissolved, and instead, retailers registered with prefectural governors took over the distribution role. The need for rice passbooks gradually diminished, and the rationing system became a mere name. The 1982 revision of the Food Control Law abolished the rationing system and introduced a prefectural governor licensing system for retail businesses. The Food Law, enacted in 1995, restored the registration system for retail businesses. This change made it easier for a variety of businesses, including convenience stores, to enter the rice sales business beyond rice stores. In 2004, the system was further relaxed and shifted to a notification system. Decrease in Rice Stores As the system changed, the number of rice stores has been declining. The name Daruma Shochu comes from the “Daruma” doll, which has the auspicious meaning of falling down seven times and getting up eight times. Daruma Shochu is a type of shochu, but it is characterized by the fact that it is blended with a small amount of sake lees shochu, which is said to be the secret to its unique flavor. In addition, the ultra-soft water used for dilution, “Wasabi no Sato no Meisui” from Yoshiwa-cho, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, brings out the soft and mellow flavor of the shochu. Shochu is a Japanese distilled spirit, typically around 25% ABV, made from a variety of base ingredients like rice, barley, sweet potatoes, or buckwheat. It’s known for its diverse flavor profiles depending on the base ingredient and production methods. Unlike sake, which is brewed, shochu is distilled, similar to whiskey.

Kabushiki gaisha Yanase is a retailer of new European and North American vehicles and used cars in Japan. As of the year 2002, Yanase has the rights of exclusive retailer of Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Audi, BMW, Volvo, Saab, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge and Smart vehicles to Japanese consumers. It is part of the Itochu group. There is a related company or subsidiary organization dealing with a particular brand of imported cars, some in rural areas. On May 25, 2015, the Yanase car dealership network celebrated its 100 anniversary. In 1964 (Showa 39), as an agent of Master Consolidated, an industrial portable heater, Master Heater became the sole agent in Japan for Tar and Lady Heaters. The catchphrase of the master heater is “I will give you heat immediately, whether outdoors or indoors”, and it was able to radiate an astonishing amount of heat as soon as the switch was turned on. It was used for various purposes such as melting snow and ice on steel frames at construction sites, curing concrete, shortening the drying time in painting work, heating vinyl greenhouses and livestock barns, and cleaning. It has also been adopted as an equipment machine for the 8th Japanese Antarctic Research Expedition.

Vintage Japanese Enamel Sign “Kiriyama dye”. This is an interesting one a dye production company for home dying fabrics and kimono’s. Quite an old one as the writing is right to left instead of the now standardised left to right. Can’t find a great deal of information about this company. = Mameyakkoshirushi (“Bean man Logo” – I’m guessing this was the mascot for the logo like the michelin man). = Kiriyama dye 1.14kg 45cm x 33cm This from someones blogspot on Japanese dyes: The Tate-dyeing teqnique uses alkaline dyes. When caustic soda and hydrosulfite are applied to the dyes to reduce them and make them soluble in water. After soaking the fibers in the solution you expose them to the the air where they oxidized into a robust color that does not come off easily even when washed. The prosperity of household dyes was probably until the 1950s, and in the 1960s, the number of people who re-dyed kimonos and made them into futons was reduced after Dylon came in. Some dyes in Dylon are boiled and dyed, but some dyes are dyed in water. It was a great complaint that anyone could easily dye something. Dylon had many colors, especially pale colors called pastel colors. Until then, dyeing that was very troublesome became easy to do in the kitchen of the apartment room, and all the fashion magazines featured dyeing using Dylon. Dyeing was even called “Dylon”. In the era of shifting from easy orders and orders to ready-made clothes, T-shirts came out, and dyed items that could be dyed in your favorite color became a bit of a boom, and Dylon was lined up at every handicraft shop. There were still many fabric shops in the middle of big towns such as in front of Shibuya station, but the cloths were exchanged in winter and summer, and cotton could not be found in winter. Since only glossy cloth and limited colors were available, some people dyed sheeting with Dylon and used it for handicrafts. Until Dylon came out, the image of household dyes was that they were quietly placed in the corners of the shelves with dust, but I was surprised at the display shelves of Kiriyama dyes. Even though they put so much effort into advertising and made a large number of colours, it is strange that I can’t even find out when Kiriyama Dye was founded and where the factory was.
